I was initially sceptical about taking zolpidem as I am generally sensitive to medication. To my surprise, however, I tolerate it very well. Apart from a slight headache at the beginning, I didn’t notice any other side effects. It has clearly changed my sleeping behaviour for the better, without making me feel drowsy during the day.

I was prescribed Zolpidem by my GP because I could hardly sleep due to enormous stress and tinnitus.
At first the effect is brilliant. After about 30 minutes your whole body feels light and good, you feel like you’re on cloud nine and before you know it you’ve already fallen asleep and usually don’t wake up again until the next day. Unfortunately, I can’t confirm the GP’s statement “it has no side effects”.
The rude awakening comes after taking it several times. Changes in taste, depressive mood, tearfulness, confusion, sore throat and, above all, massive nausea and stomach and intestinal pain as well as heartburn spoil your day from then on. At first I didn’t see any connection between the medication and the symptoms, as some of the symptoms didn’t even appear until days or weeks later. And then you get into a vicious circle. You feel so bad physically and mentally in the evening due to the side effects that you can’t fall asleep without a tablet. You need the effect of feeling your body less and then you slip into dependency. After many weeks of irregular use, I stopped taking it from one day to the next and went through a severe cold turkey. I hardly slept for weeks, had anxiety, restlessness, kidney pain, a sore throat and confusion. I recommend drinking a lot of water and taking herbal sedatives and melatonin during withdrawal.

Indeed, this pill aids in sleep, but the underlying truth is that it’s a depressant, implying it has a more extensive impact than one might initially comprehend. Typically, I’m in a good mood and initiate conversations, but after a few weeks, I started to notice a shift in my mood. I felt low, uninterested in everything, and would spend the entire evening barely speaking to my wife. At first, I couldn’t identify the cause of my issue until it occurred to me that it might be the medication I was taking. So, I stopped taking it and returned to my usual self. For me, the negative side effects weren’t worth it, just thought I’d share.
