My son took this medication. He can’t speak or express himself, so I can only speak from my point of view.
He is often very tired and listless and it seems to me that he has had problems with his balance. After stopping the medication, we haven’t had a seizure for over a year now, he is more awake and alert and his balance is great too.
This medication was one of the worst things that ever happened to me. Valproic acid never seemed to work for me from the beginning, as it made me feel slightly foggy and did not prevent the seizures very well. But the real troubles began when I had a breakthrough seizure at 16 years old and the neurologist raised the dose to 1750mg, which made me very drowsy and sleep for 11-13 hours every day. I would also fall asleep at school so often that the teacher had to contact my parents. It was only last year when the medication actually caused more seizures than it stopped that the neurologist ordered a blood test and found toxic amounts of Valproic acid in my blood and told me to quit it asap. I started to feel better about a week after stopping it completely, but to be honest I have never really recovered fully. Enough with my whining about all the bad things I have endured with this medication, my main point is that I strongly advise against giving this to anyone under 16, this medication is harmful to children and should be a last resort as there is a much greater risk of overdosing at a young age that could lead to permanent brain damage. So if you feel extremely tired on this medication, call your doctor asap and demand a blood test.
