I work in a breast center and would like to share my experiences with patients who have received pembrolizumab. Unfortunately, I cannot share the positive experiences and results of other patients.
There were several patients with serious side effects that significantly reduced their quality of life or caused permanent damage.
For example, severe neuropathies that turned an elderly patient into a nursing case. She can no longer stand up on her own and can barely walk a few steps – e.g. to the toilet. After extensive examinations, the neurologists came to the conclusion that Pembroli must have been the trigger. She also has constant headaches. She also had a wound healing disorder and was hospitalized for weeks.
Another younger patient was hospitalized for 2 weeks with fever and high CRP values after each infusion of Pembroli. She also had allergic skin reactions and itching all over her body. Once she was admitted to the ITS with sepsis. She had developed various intolerances to all kinds of medication and antibiotics.
Another patient came to the ICU with pneumonia and severe sepsis after being given Pembroli. Her skin was peeling off all over her body. Among other things, she had received Pembroli as neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
These are all experience reports that raise the question: Is it the combination with other chemotherapeutic agents such as epirubicin, carboplatin, taxanes that cause such side effects? Are such side effects concealed? The price is very high!
The main side effects I experienced were a sense of fatigue, headaches, stomach or abdominal discomfort, and redness in the eyes. Interestingly, these symptoms did not manifest until after the second treatment.
