My husband has been living with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) for two decades, but he never required treatment until recently. His condition was monitored closely over the years. However, in the past two years, his platelet and white blood cell counts have been fluctuating, falling outside the normal range. He also experienced intermittent night sweats. In February, his platelet count dropped to 18, prompting treatment. Since he had not previously received any treatment, he was prescribed a regimen of Obinutuzumab (Gazyva) and Chlorambucil. He is nearing the end of his treatment cycle. So far, he has not experienced any sick days or side effects. His blood work is encouraging, with his platelet count now at 112. His white and red blood cell counts are slightly low, but overall, he is in good health and has responded remarkably well to the medications. He also takes Acyclovir daily and Bactrim thrice a week to ward off potential infections. His magnesium levels dipped slightly, so he received a couple of magnesium infusions. He is currently taking magnesium pills daily, and his magnesium levels are now within the normal range. He occasionally experiences mild constipation, which he manages effectively with Senna, an over-the-counter natural laxative recommended by his triage nurse. His recent HbA1C test result was 6, and his liver and kidney function tests are within normal limits. We are hopeful for a positive remission from CLL.
