In managing my schizoaffective disorder, loxapine has been nothing short of a miracle. It empowers me to function at a high level while maintaining stability, and I haven’t required hospitalization since I began taking it 8 years ago. Regrettably, I couldn’t entirely discontinue the zyprexa I was previously on; I still need a small dose of 2.5mg alongside loxapine. However, in conjunction with my mood stabilizer (lamictal) and antidepressant (wellbutrin SR), I never envisioned achieving such remarkable stability. Although I experience some side effects, they are not overly bothersome. Occasional muscle twitches persist, but I choose to endure them rather than introduce yet another medication (such as cogentin). I am nearly symptom-free. I’ve learned that loxapine bears striking similarities to clozapine, yet it doesn’t lead to as much weight gain or blood disorders. And here’s another noteworthy detail: since starting this medication and reducing zyprexa, I’ve managed to shed over 70 lbs. I wholeheartedly recommend this drug for individuals dealing with schizophrenia or schizoaffective conditions. The fact that it isn’t prescribed more frequently remains a mystery to me; I suspect its efficacy rivals that of clozapine.
